The most densely populated whisky region in the world sits in a fertile valley of rivers and glens. Home to over half of Scotland’s distilleries, Speyside malts from these fifty or so distilleries are hard to summarize, as there’s a lot of flavour variety.

Perching just above England, the Lowlands can play truant from peat or salinity. Triple distilled malts are characteristic of the region, offering a gentle, elegant palate reminiscent of grass, honeysuckle, cream, ginger, toffee, toast and cinnamon.

The first producers of whisky in India were Amrut, who have been established since 1948, although they produced other spirits first. It was in 1982 that they started producing whisky. However, single malts were not popular at the time, so the liquid was used to create blends.

When it comes to single malt Whiskies from the Highlands, there’s no common denominator. Just like the landscape that can go from violet-stained moors into sea-lashed coastlines encrusted with caves, in a matter of miles, Highland single malts too, have a lot of flavour versatility to offer.

Until the late 1980s, most of the whisky sold around the world was blended Scotch. Single malts were not really important and were very small in terms of volume sales. Hence, when cuts needed to be made during the slump, distilleries producing whisky which had little flavour impact in blended Scotches were shut down.
